Information on Adult Orthodontics

While orthodontic treatments are often believed to be geared more towards straightening the teeth of teenagers, this isn’t always the case. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, one in four orthodontic patients is an adult. Orthodontic treatment can be done at any age and can be beneficial and prevent future dental problems for the patient.

What’s the Difference Between Adult and Teen Orthodontics?

It may come as a surprise, but there is very little difference between the biological process of orthodontic treatment for either adults or children. The goal remains the same; moving the teeth into their correct places using the pressure from the treatment placed upon them. One of the biggest differences in treatment lies in the fact that adults are no longer growing, so it can take longer for the orthodontic treatment to finish, as the teeth have a higher density than the teeth of children. Another difference is that adults are more likely to be on medication or have habits such as smoking, which can affect the outcome of the treatment, but rarely makes the treatment ineffective.

Why Does an Adult Need Orthodontics?

Proper orthodontic treatment is vital to protecting the longevity of your teeth, even as you grow older. There’s a good chance your teeth can last you a lifetime if they are properly treated. One of the benefits is that properly aligned teeth are easier to clean and are less prone to gum disease, which can be dangerous due to the fact that it doesn’t cause any pain to those who have minor variations of it. Straightened teeth will also correct your bite, which will prevent improper pressure from being placed on your teeth and improve the longevity of your teeth. On top of all of that, a clean, straight smile can be a major boost to your self-confidence.
